That one landlord sounds like he is really taking advantage of the situation. Some friends here that were looking for rentals went through a lot of that because there's a serious housing shortage - landlords would ask for huge deposits, co-signers that earn 5X the rent, payment of several months in advance, etc. Very abusive.

Well I have enough for a plane ticket, so get that futon ready!
I agree with you about the landlord being shady, wanting to take advantage of my misfortune by trying to overcharge me for the deposit, rent, etc. I turned him down. Yuck. Sorry to hear that your friends went through something similar!
I had a good meeting with the woman last night who is renting her basement out. She doesn't have an egress window (for escape from a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning) but I need shelter, so if she ok's me, I will probably just buy a fire extinguisher and hope for the best.
It's a small space but it would be better than sleeping in my car or vying for a shelter bed every night. Just until I can get back on my feet. Then next week I will go look at a one bedroom in an apartment complex that solely rents to students (bad credit and all), so that could be a possible solution too, if my application gets accepted.
The recruiter I showed my resume to this week, at the new temp agency I joined, won't submit me for a 6 month receptionist job because I won't write this as my professional summary, "I am looking for a job opportunity now after taking care of my mother."
I tried to explain to him that it's not appropriate to include personal information on a resume -- that information is not relevant to my job skills or work history -- but he was adamant that I do it (I refused because that's just dumb -- no one I know puts personal information like that on their work resume). So, I will have to just apply to more temp agencies this weekend if he's not going to submit me for jobs for that ridiculous reason about my resume content. This is exactly what I hate about temp agencies -- you're livelihood is at the whim of these recruiters. They can be real assholes and decide not to help you because they don't like you, or they can be very professional with you and decide to help you.
