You say that your honesty was a mistake, but it doesn't seem like making empty promises helped your co-workers that much either. Personally, I think it's better to stand your ground. Caving just reenforces the behavior, especially if they do get what they want.

I feel great about being honest, what I regret is listening to their crap for longer than they deserved. I would feel like I needed permission to hang up on them (whereas some of my coworkers would have or transferred despite their protests, etc.). On occassion, my team leader listened in then said transfer their ***** (they would never want to be transferred since the wait times were long and they were enjoying torturing me

) Most customers are not like this but a few are so so nasty....
