Good question and use of logic. It does not sound like it would be constructive to confront them based on their reactions. The reason you confront someone is in hopes of a change. But if they are becoming angry and defensive and even accusatory (saying that you are being clingy) and unwilling to understand your POV, it does not look like change would be happening any time soon. Therefore, I think it's best to conserve your energy for better friends.
