Back pain and vomiting sounds like kidney stone to me. Not a dr but that's what it was like for me. If it worsens he probably needs urgent care or the ER because that is serious pain and feeling crappy.
Glad the meeting with Carol went well and that she'll work with you on the alternative book. You can do this. Figuring out your patterns has to help.
