If you haven't heard of her, you might want to do a search for Ellen Sachs, she went on to be pretty successful in spite of the illness. I think in general the sooner it is treated the better your chances are. I didn't get treated for at least 4 years and did a lot of damage to my life, which I feel is the biggest obstacle now. I am not self sufficient.
