I think a lot of people are jerks because their lives haven't been personally touched yet by profound loss or tragedy. Their humanity actually has to be kicked into gear by life or God or whatever you believe. But until you have personally experienced the worst that life has to offer, there are a lot of humans who just have very little empathy for anyone. It's all about them.
