Hi saucygirl. I have never had DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) or any alternative identity or alter. However, I have experienced dissociative symptoms and both a past therapist and my psychiatrist acknowledged that I likely experienced some depersonalization and derealization, as well as some dissociative amnesia, but not related to DID. There is actually a disorder called Depersonalization Derealization Disorder that is not the same as DID. I don't believe I ever fully met the criteria for Depersonalization Derealization Disorder, and only experienced these states off and on for maybe a few years. I was usually triggered into such states by specific triggers.
Grounding techniques and other therapeutic interventions have helped rid me of concerning dissociative symptoms. I say "concerning" because almost everyone experiences some form of dissociation. There is a common type in a more normal realm and a more dysfunctional type.
If you're interested in my experience, or some grounding techniques I've used, I'm happy to share a blog post I wrote.
