I answered this somewhere else recently.
Generally I like quiet. I dislike voices or music when I want to sleep, but do like nature sounds (summer insects, rainfall, birds). I don't mind the sound of the central AC/heat or a fan. I have used a sound machine to help me sleep. I like that and it usually helps, but I use it only as needed.
Also, I like my room to be as dark as possible for sleep. Dark.
