I am in the UK. There is a huge demand for interim finance staff in the public sector. If you are inclined to work for yourself, set up a limited company and register with a handful of agencies. Day rates can be £500-2000. Contracts are 3-12 months. You can work for 6-9 months/ year and do your own thing for the rest. I know people who've been doing this for years. It's a good way to live.
