Hi jrae. I am sorry you have had a major shock to the system. I think seeing a professional that is skilled at dealing with trauma is an important step in the process. Therapists can talk us through situations and psychiatrists can prescribe treatments that keep us stable.

Getting away from toxic environments could help, although that is not always easy or financially possible. Having a support group can help develop trust in people and yourself.
