I wrote you a PM, Beth. It was many pages, but I'll post just a couple of sentences here, because... well, I think this sums it up much more concisely than I did in the PM :P
There's a part in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy where two of the characters are talking about the answer to life's mysteries, the meaning of it all, if you will. One character says something like: maybe I'm old and tired, but it seems to me that the chances of finding out what's going on in the universe are so remote, you just have to say to 'hell with it' and keep yourself busy. I'd much rather be happy than right any day.
The other character asks, well are you? Happy?
To which he responds, "No. That's where it all falls down".
