I actually think a lot of people who get into psychiatry do so because they or a loved one has mental health concerns.

My therapist has boughts of anxiety and depression. She shares some of her own experiences and I find it comforting to not feel alone. I also think in some ways she relates more to me. She isn't just listening, but understands.

I don't think a mental health issue should prohibit one from being a professional, provided your symptoms are managed and won't compromise patient care. Beyond that I consider it an asset overall.
