I found an interesting article right here on Psych Central that discusses the subject mentioned topic. It's at
Perfectionism, Anxiety & Bipolar Disorder | Bipolar Laid Bare The article sites different categories of perfectionism, including:
* Self-oriented perfectionism (but only in regards to
some things about or done by oneself, but
not requiring perfection from others)
* Self-oriented perfectionism (about
everything done by or about oneself, but
not of others)
* Other-oriented (when one demands perfection from others, but not oneself)
* Universal (when one demands perfection from others AND oneself) - "Universal' is my term for this.
* Socially-prescribed ("...concerned with how others judge them. They perceive high standards set by those around them and strive to meet those expectations.")
The article mentions a higher incidence of some form(s) of perfectionism in people with bipolar disorder. It also mentions the tendency to have related anxiety disorder(s), such as general anxiety disorder or OCD, and how they exacerbate or spark bipolar episodes in those with bipolar disorder.
_______________
I can definitely relate to some of this. In my case, I fit the category of "Self-oriented, but only about some things, not all." However, the things I strive for perfection in doing can cause unhealthy behaviors/outcomes. The striving itself can be immensely stressful. The stress is often a trigger for my episodes. I have had to abandon the idea of ever returning to my previous job. I've also had to either stop or process other things with my therapist.

The article also includes tips on how to control anxiety-inducing perfectionism. Check it out, if interested.
