Literally it was a function of a piece of ice being jammed into the door handle. Like if you had tried to start opening the door and got it 1/2 way and stuck a piece of ice in there as a shiv. I don't now how it happened. Possibly it was ice being kicked up from the street as I drove by. The side door was never opened at all before I got home so not sure how that happened. The back doors have a different latch type so they didn't have the problem.
If it were to happen again I could put the window down and pull the piece of ice out, but it was darn scary. I have been considering getting a new car and now I am seriously considering it.
