I just got out of the hospital. I went in to the ER because I felt confused, thirsty, and was having blackouts and muscle spasms. I found out I have diabetes insipidus. That's why I've been having psychosis like symptoms and rapid weight loss, etc. They assumed it was just psychiatric and told me it's anxiety even though I didn't feel anxious. Then after the test results came back from the lab did a water deprivation test and then gave me electrolytes and things are back to normal. Like night and day. I feel so glad to know what's been going on with me. But the nurses and docs treated me like I was crazy and 'another mental patient.' I don't blame them. I'm sure they see this stuff on a daily basis but it also sucks because I have felt like I can't complain about physical issues because they'll just assume my bipolar or ptsd on the chart. They also kept asking me if I'm an alcoholic and treated me like I was a child at first. Finally now I know though. The doc in the ER thinks it could be caused by lithium over the 3 years I used to take it. Excessive thirst, drinking too much water, then your kidneys making your body and mind think it needs more and more water, while electrolytes never stay in the system. I haven't taken lithium in 2 yrs but these symptoms started after I quit lithium. And have gotten worse by worse by the week.
