I'm determined to get tubal ligation, as I don't want kids, but need to go off the pill as I'm an older, overweight smoker, which makes me a stroke risk if I keep taking it now I'm in my late 30s.

I have been offered IUDs numerous times, but several friends had them & experienced complications, so I've decided not to get one. I'd advise reading up on the possible adverse effects of them, & speaking to your doctor about any concerns, before going ahead with this.

I wish my boyfriend would get a vasectomy - it's way less invasive than tubal ligation, but alas, you know how precious boys are about the family jewels... he pales at the very idea of it!
