I would just point out that the visual system in humans is obviously closely intertwined with the emotion regulation pathways, otherwise, when we looked at our baby, we would know it is our baby, but we wouldn't feel anything. I believe for some of us, these visual changes, experiences, whatever you want to call them, are quite possibly connected to our mental illnesses. Just my take.
