Castoria sounded familiar. But I had to look it up to recall specifically. It was Fletcher's Castoria (now called Fletcher's Laxative.) It's "an oral syrup containing a stimulant laxative and ingredients to soothe the stomach."
One other thing I recall was Paregoric. I recall my mother putting it on my teeth if I had a toothache. (I was only taken to the dentist, or the doctor either for that matter, if it was absolutely necessary.) For some reason I really liked the taste. Now I can perhaps understand why I liked it since it is a "camphorated tincture of opium".
