Any antipsychotic can trigger TD, unfortunately. First generation antipsychotics carry the highest risk of causing TD, but people often forget that the second generation antipsychotics -- the "safer" ones -- can cause it too.

The good news is that the existence of TD can be dose dependent, which means that sometimes reducing the dose of your TD-causing med eliminates TD altogether. That may be the case for you.

You're right that TD can be come permanent, so if you decide to stay on Abilify, just keep a watchful eye out for resurgence of TD symptoms. However, I do want to point out that there is a newer "version" of Abilify that is available on the market. It's called Rexulti. I don't know if you've heard of it, but it's chemically very similar and supposedly carries a lower risk of side effects compared to Abilify. I have been on Rexulti for almost 3 years at this point, I think.
