I know exactly what you mean; I grapple with accepting all sorts of traumas I've experienced as being as serious as they were. It also doesn't help that so many people I've know downplayed what happened or blamed me for it--blaming the victim is a common problem for people who don't have empathy or want to experience empathy. But I know these things were extremely damaging and I do not exaggerate them.
