I think it's easy to see how people with Bipolar disorder are attracted to addictive medication. They often use drugs as "self-medicating" measures. This has resulted in drug addiction being the most common dual diagnosis with Bipolar Disorder.

A drug addiction compromises therapy and starts a whole new set of problems. As another poster mentioned it also causes problems with your existing medication.
