There was a study called MATADOR that showed your body starts reducing calories burned by 14 days into reduction in calories. However, it wasn't a large amount and generally took about 3 months before substantial reductions were noticed.

The recommendation was to diet for 2 weeks and then eat no more than your calories burned for two weeks.

This study showed if you did that you would lose more weight and put less back on because your metabolism would not reduce as much.
