I'm not sure of the answer, yellow_fleur. I wish I knew. Perhaps part of it had to do with the major psychological crash I had over 10 years ago, and just never fully getting back into a groove where I could maintain momentum for a longer while. I remember maybe 4 or 5 years ago, I managed to take one online college class per semester for three semesters in a row. I completed each, and even got an "A" in each. That was just one class per semester. When I attempted to add more, that was too much. I've never quite gotten back to that point since.
Are you feeling perhaps "why bother?" if you're just going to hit another depression?
No, I don't think so. I still keep trying and trying even if I've given up momentarily. It is frustrating when I keep trying and still can't keep things up, though.
I know it can make me feel a little defeated, personally. Something that might help is to remember that just because you have stopped being productive now doesn't mean the work you put in before doesn't count.
Thank you, yellow_fleurs. I know you're right on this.
Did you learn anything in taking your French classes? If so, that is something. You can always go back to it later. Being hard on yourself might only discourage you further. I think if we internalize that we will never finish anything, it can become what we expect of ourselves. Perhaps setting up mini goals to celebrate your success could help keep you motivated? If you meet those goals, than you can remind yourself you did in fact do something without quitting.
I really like and appreciate this suggestion. I did learn a little. I shouldn't discount that.

yellow_fleurs, thank you for asking all of these questions and really making me think about this more intensely. By the way, I love yellow flowers. Forsythia is my favorite.
