I would start by telling him how hard your life has been and how some of your past luggage has made it difficult for you to open up to others and that you feel more comfortable with him than any one else in your life and that is why you are opening up to him the best you know how right now and that you are working on opening up to him even more, but that you might need some gentle support from him to get the words out of your mouth.
