Why? Because they need a constant supply of admiration, praise, attention.. and they're unable to receive enough of it from one person. They really can't function without it.. and will hurt, sabotage, disregard, stomp on anyone else who gets in their way. They are so insecure with themselves, they need it to help project a false image of themselves (that they're wanted, are special, irresistible, etc).

They don't care because they are only able to feel what they feel and nobody else.
