I talked with my dad about the Cortot trio recording. (Violin, piano and cello.) Recorded in the 1930's, they would often times slide from one note to the next. He said, "You know where schmaltz comes from? Chicken fat! If you were schmaltzy you had chicken fat on your fingerboard and were sliding all over the place!"
