Anger more often than not comes from pain. In this respect anger serves two purposes:

1. If someone/something is hurting you it is sometimes survival advantageous to get angry as a defense. If you hurt hem back they may desist in hurting you further.
2. It's easier to feel anger than pain, so we sometimes use it as an avoidant mechanism.

Either way, you might feel less angry if you work through the pain.
