MoutainDewed, it sounds like the person a head of you was being nice. I consider that sort of thing "paying it forward." There was no need for you to pay for the person behind you. If one day you feel moved to do something similar, fine. If not that's fine too.
FWIW, you could not get me to eat in a restaurant right now. But if I did I would likely give a generous tip. I used to work for tips and tend to tip more than others anyway. That said, I believe the expectation of a 50% tip is outrageous.
