It's a good one stop in a pinch sometimes.

It isn't necessary or helpful. Canada, especially the part I live in, is doing well, and cases are declining, so it makes no sense for a private company to enact this measure which is contrary to current recommendations from the authorities. Nominally tougher measures are nonsensical when the situation is improving. It seems as though Wal-Mart executives decided they needed to be seen to do something, so they did the one thing they weren't already doing. Besides, I don't like it when a company tries to restrict my bodily autonomy. Masks are uncomfortable, and I don't want to wear them, especially not without a good reason. The emphasis on mask-wearing, one of the least effective measures, is bordering on hysteria.
