You could make sure they are aware of your hearing disability and any needs before they start the exam. I think it is better to over communicate.

I would guess the person doing the exam is just a motor vehicle employee, so it is not a policeman. Maybe reminding yourself of that might help. They spend their day giving exams and filling out forms.
