For controlled substances, some states require a written prescription so the MD can keep a carbon copy of the script.
It seems that in my state, or at least in my region, they're allowing computer ordered prescriptions now. What a relief.
Start checking out options, is my advice. Sometimes they're there, sometimes they're not and we have to deal with the pdoc we have. Since you're not a small town, though, you probably have options.
