When your parents threaten to throw you out unless you heed every single warning they say and abide by every rule they impose on you, there is no other choice than to not apply oneself, and do enough to pass and not shine
Or bring too much attention to oneself.

Your biological father
Made me watch every penny.
Had his eye on every
Pound I spent.
Once we were married,
He was abusive... verbally.
Then when he had
A stroke, he was unbearable.
You were better
Away from him back then.
Both of us were.
Most weeks my mum,
Would give my sibling
Their dinner money and
I would get less.
She would say:
Boys get more.
Ask your father.
Do you think
Money grows on tree's?
You are so ungrateful.
We inherit the sins of the father.
Now reap what you sow.
When I was young I knew my
Mum was telling the truth.
I'm not sure why
She did not tell
Me that he never
Came to the hospital
To see me being born.
Nobody wants to be left alone.
I could not stay
In a relationship with
Someone who made
Me feel alone and
Tried to isolate me
From my friends and family.
My old flame should have
Realised that I was
More acutely atuned
To knowing when someone
Was playing mind games
And I would not stand for it,
And not the other way around
Where I would accept and engage in them.
Actions have consequences.
