It’s not about charitable acts to the needy— You were giving to get something in return- his love. When the recipient of this giving accepts the ‘gifts’, which are the things you offered to do to help him, they are just taking. After that, they don’t want any more ‘gifts’ because it’s obvious they are expected to reciprocate with the love the giver wants. That’s why he acted hot then cold, and eventually ghosted. The giving is actually manipulative because you want to get love as a result of him learning how wonderful you are and how lucky he is to have one as giving as you... but love doesn’t work that way and that sometimes just causes resentment from the recipient of the giver. I know, I’ve been there.
