I think could be related to anxiety, one of the natural symptoms of anxiety is emotional issues. You cannot do anything about this, but you can assure him, that you care. He probably feels like this because he doesnt think his people care about him. My sister does the same thing, i tell her i love her, but nobody else does, and that is a problem.
