I relate to this. Sometimes in the context of shopping, but also nightlife and gambling.
The purpose of the compulsion to spend may be different for you. My spending comes as a "side-effect" of chasing a good feeling. The different "flavors" of the high-chasing switches (for me) and it may be clubbing, wagering money and shopping. I did have a period of time I was seeking sex and took risks in that regard.

To answer MsLady's question. I don't think impulsive shopping is a core trait of BPD, but impulsivity is a criterion of BPD listed in the DSM-V.
