I've taken Paxil since 1996 and found it to be a great med for depression. The only side effect I noticed of any import was that of weight gain. However, I also have lost weight while taking Paxil. I switched to Celexa a few weeks ago, though, because I thought it might be better in the weight-gain arena. As long as I exercise, I can keep my weight down but if I miss a few days or over-eat too often, say, around the holidays, I gain weight pretty easily, and right now I'm about 20 pounds overweight. I need to get this weight off, hence the change to Celexa to see if I could get it off faster and keep it off better. So far no change in weight, thought.
I really think that Paxil is a great antidepressant, but I also know it has a bad profile as far as for weight gain and I've read other posts that aren't too complimentary. You can give it a try, is about all I can say. I find that Celexa, which is about the same as Lexapro, is pretty comparable to Paxil as far as getting rid of depression.
Good luck.
