Seriously, thank you everyone, and thank you ladymacbeth for your explanation. I do agree we all have choices, and I have made some bad ones over a very lengthy period to get myself here. I might have accepted it better if the person had phrased it a bit more gently, but as it stands I still don't think it was an appropriate reply to someone who had asked for support. And I did indeed leave the group.
