I kinda like the check in thread (I'm assuming it's threads like that one you're referring to) because it's just that, a place to check in. Just say what's up, talk about things that don't really merit their own thread. I don't really keep up with it either as in read every post in its entirety (esp. because some posts are quite wordy and I just don't have that concentration), but it's cool to see how people are doing. We do start a new check-in thread every 100 pages, and it's not required reading. There is still the "New Thread" button for those who have a topic they want extra attention to, as well.
