I like happy endings. I can read unhappy endings but I don't want to watch unhappy and I really really don't want to pay for unhappy or sad. I can get unhappy, horrifying and sad just from doing my job as a public defender or court appointed attorney for civil commitments. I prefer my escapism/fantasy world to be happy/witty place rather than sad or scary. In fact, I prefer almost no story arc at all - a happy sandwich - happy at the beginning, happy in the middle, happy at the end. Sad unhappy opera doesn't really bother me because most of it is in a language I don't understand with spiffy costumes and often a character I want to put out of their misery so when they die, it is sort of a relief.
