If I remember correctly the original concept of a "slam book" came from the wonderful, old Katie John series of books. They were published in the early '60's. My friends and I did slam books in 6th grade and (as expected) a lot of feelings were hurt.
I have done the game of passing around a paper and writing something complimentary about the person whose name is on the paper. It was an ice-breaker for the first day of training to be a summer camp counselor. It was fun, and very affirming.
