I agree with this and think that in any way promoting self medication for bipolar, or sleep issues, with OTC medications is a bad influence. For those who want to use them, I think psychiatrist approval should be had. I also think that changing doses of prescribed medications, willy-nilly, unless prescribed as a prn, does no good. This is especially true when it comes to adapting to a medication, getting past side effects, and keeping a psychiatrist informed on what a true mood and sleep situation (and medication regime) is. Most psychiatrists put up with that to some degree, but have breaking points, at which time they may choose to end the patient-doctor relationship. Therapists can have their breaking points, too. It can really be no different than drug addiction habits. I know about them well and can write that I only found lasting stability when I stopped that once and for all.
