hvert - Apparently that was the idea of the Health Minister who resigned last year. Of course with the Brazilian variant that they laid out the red carpet for, it looks like you can easily get it again if you had another variant the first time. That's what happened in Manaus, Brazil. So many people got Covid in the first wave there, that they were considered to have herd immunity. But, the Brazilian P.1 variant appeared and many people are dealing with reinfections.

I read somewhere, I can't track it down right now, where an infectious disease specialist was saying that with a 50% effective vaccine, you'd need about 20% more people to get sick and recover to have herd immunity. And that was before the variants started popping up. With a population of 19 million, 3.8 million would need to get Covid to reach that 20%. We are closing in on 1.1 million infected. I guess you'd need another 2.7 million to get it, but that's likely a moot point due to the new variants anyways.

Well, bad news, I struck out with the pulmonologist. He did call me yesterday, but he took the line that I just need to go and get what is on offer because it will give me some protection.

Oh, and, this is being reported on in many media outlets: China admits its vaccines aren't very good - POLITICO . I wonder if it's going to get any coverage here or if the government is going to try and censor it. There have been suspicious things going on with some articles about people dying from Covid after having both doses. From the article:

BEIJING — In a rare admission of the weakness of Chinese coronavirus vaccines, the country’s top disease control official says their effectiveness is low and the government is considering mixing them to get a boost.
Chinese vaccines “don’t have very high protection rates,” said the director of the China Centers for Disease Control, Gao Fu, at a conference Saturday in the southwestern city of Chengdu.
