But I did want to say that I think the reasons you give are perfectly good ones, and that I don't remember what made me think it would be a good idea the first time, either.

I'm sure, in her own weird way, your mom loves you and wants to help and understand. She maybe just doesn't quite know how to go about it. If you think you would be comfortable doing so, ask her to set aside a time to talk when you both are calm and in a good place and then just tell her "I feel (X) when you do (Y) and here is what I need from you." Easier said than done, I know -- I'm middle-aged and still haven't been able to do that with MY mom , but there's a lot behind the reasons why for that.
