I, too, in my 40s, started to mourn the days of easy friendship of my 20s and 30s. Waxing nostalgic to a friend with 4 kids, she burst out laughing and said -- Who has time to sit around in the evenings, drinking wine and hanging out?

I'm in my 50s, and I think this discovery of the single person that one's social life has dissipated is a common experience, probably usually in our 40s. Especially if we are not living in a city. Most of Florida is the 'burbs, and the burbs are best for family life.
