I would disagree it's a work relationship. Volunteers are there giving of their personal time. Volunteers have personal relationships with the nonprofits they volunteer for. As someone with nearly 20 years experience in the nonprofit field, this was poor treatment of a volunteer. Volunteer coordinators typically let volunteers know they will be leaving and give them a farewell email and thank them for their service. They'll also introduce the new point of contact.
