I'm so sorry to hear about someone stealing your doormat, Beth Rags. That is just awful!

Can you install one of those doorbell camera thingies that record who comes to your door, etc.? Perhaps you can then catch the person the next time, if you decide to purchase another doormat, or if you experience porch pirates in the future.
