How I can relate to this and it's not just friends! Relatives can also do this when they can see no wrong in their words or actions.

You should be accepted for who you are, not who they think you should be.

And sometimes, as we get older/wiser, we can "grow out" of friendships. It could be a disagreement, life taking a different route to theirs, changing attitude. I severed a longstanding friendship because the person she'd become wasn't very nice. It was on the rocks for a while before the final straw was her nasty comments about my (then) newly arrived niece. Strange, as ex-friend had two children by then.
