Some people want to be left alone. Nothing to do with being shy.

When my daughter (very much a social butterfly and opposite of shy) was in a middle school, she literally talked to no one. I had to put her into different high school out of the school district (very cookie cutter main streamed, not her crowd at all). That was a game changer
