Hi Freewill,

That really sucks. I can't help with the insurance questions, but I can help the identity stuff.

Make sure he reports this to the police, and mentions that his social security number was compromised.

Then he needs to contact every credit bureau there is, not sure what they are in the US but I'm sure his bank could tell him. He needs to get in touch with their fraud divisions, they'll have one, and have a note added to his credit file that his social security number was stolen, and he is to be contacted directly should any new credit be applied for in his name. In Canada, that stays on your file for 7 years. Then when any credit issuers applies for a credit check, you get a phone call saying that credit has been applied for in your name, and is it really you. At that point it's up to him to contact the credit issuer and say that he did not apply for the product.

I was a victim of identity theft last summer, and have run into several cases of people trying to get credit under my name, SIN.

I've also signed up for a credit monitoring service which basically lets me know every time my credit file is queried or a new account is openned.- so I can proactively see anything that isn't mine. The service I use covers Equifax and Transunion, both of which I think have US operations.

Hope he get's everything sorted out.
