The testing shown in this clip was primarily an EEG (electroencephalography). I think they also shown an MRI

To me the take home message was that to really get to the root of the problem it takes a comprehensive neurological exam and a doctor who is really interested in finding what the problem actually is. The boy highlighted in the segment had auditory processing issue I think associated with ADHD. He was getting what sounded like speech therapy which was ineffective for his condition. They change his therapy approach to address this issue and put him on ADHD medication and the results were profound.

The video clip just made me think about how my own diagnosis was made. Just makes you wonder how many times ineffective treatments are continued simply because no one takes time or has the interest to fully investigate the problem.

After seeing programs like this one I can't help thinking about the many people out there who have children in this situation. Who are really wanting to find answers but only get health care providers who do 5 minute assessments, write out the Rx.

The thing is I'm lucky. I KNOW the quality of care I am receiving in poor! I have good insurance, can travel out of town if need be, and I am educated enough to know what questions to ask and to research this condition on my own. In my case I don't blame my poor care all on my neurologist, because... well, I'm a jackass.

I just really feel for the individuals who are dealing with their health care providers openly and directly but are still getting crappy care.

Maybe the biggest problem with ADHD, especially in the adult population, is that it is a quality of life issue and not a life threatening condition. If you really want good care you need to find a doctor/ therapist/PNP who really cares and is not just into slapping a band-aid on you and sending you on your way.
